The Greatest Thing in the World

When I was a young evangelist, traveling around the country in a motorhome from church to church, someone handed me a book and said, “This book will really help you.”   The title caught my attention, “The Greatest Thing in the World” by Henry Drummond, who was good friends with DL Moody.  It was a classic message on 1 Corinthians 13 also known as the love chapter of the Bible.  As I began to read, I thought, “There is no way I can love people, be kind, think and talk nice, and forgive those who offend me!”  In my frustration and realizing how impossible it was for me to measure up to Paul’s description of the God-kind of love, I threw the book across the room and shouted, “There is no way I can love like this!”

Then I heard the voice of the Holy Spirit say, “Go pick that book up, read it and put it into practice.”  I picked up the book again and began to read.  I can tell you today that what the Lord said is true about walking in the love of God and it has made a big difference in my life.

Henry Drummond said this about the Apostle Paul, and it gave me hop

Love was not Paul’s strong point. The observing student can detect a beautiful tenderness growing and ripening all through his character as Paul gets old; but the hand that wrote, “The greatest of these is love,” when we meet it first, is stained with blood.

Peter says, “Above all things have fervent love among yourselves.” Above all things. And John goes further, “God is love.” And you remember the profound remark which Paul makes elsewhere, “Love is the fulfilling of the law.”

The Lord Jesus Himself said in John 13:35, “By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.”

Paul, in three verses, gives us an amazing analysis of what this supreme thing is. It is a compound thing. It is like light. As a beam of light passes through a crystal prism, as you have seen it come out on the other side of the prism broken up into its component colors—red, and blue, and yellow, and violet, and orange, and all the colors of the rainbow—so Paul passes this thing, love, through the magnificent prism of his inspired intellect and it comes out on the other side broken up into its elements. One might call it the spectrum of love, the analysis of love. Will you observe what its elements are? Will you notice that they have common names; that they are virtues which we hear about every day.

The spectrum of love has nine ingredients.

Patience…………………………….……………..Love suffereth long
Kindness……………………….…………………………...And is kind
Generosity………………………….………………...Love envieth not
Humility………………….. Love vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up
Courtesy……………………………Doth not behave itself unseemly
Unselfishness……………………………………Seeketh not her own
Good Temper…………………………………..Is not easily provoked
Guilelessness…………………..……………………..Thinketh no evil
Sincerity………….Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth

As I began to learn about love, to renew my mind and to put it into practice, my prayers started working and the blessing of the Lord was more evident.  Then I heard a message from my father in the faith, Rev. Kenneth E. Hagin.  It was also the last message I heard him preach before he went to be with the Lord.  It was titled, “What Have You Done With Love?”  He came down the steps of the platform, stood in front of me and began to minister about walking in God’s love.  He had left his notes on the podium and asked me to run up and get them for him.  He then began to unfold the most important revelation that night, and his words still burn in my heart about how to love those close to us and how to forgive anyone who has wronged us.  That night impacted my life, and I began to put into practice what all the writers of the New Testament have to say about the God-kind of love.  Dad Hagin said that walking in this love is the way to victory.  He also said that if you step out of love you’re on the devil’s territory and he will attack you.  You should jump back in as fast as you can.

Paul summed up his words about love in 1 Corinthians 13:13, “And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.”  The Passion Translation says, “Until then, there are three things that remain: faith, hope, and love—yet love surpasses them all. So above all else, let love be the beautiful prize for which you run.”  Walking in the God-kind of love is the way to win in life.  The God-kind of love is inexhaustible and indestructible.

Joy in the Holy Ghost

For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost. - Romans 14:17

I love this quote from C.S. Lewis, a respected author who had some great things to say about joy. He said, “Joy is the serious business of Heaven.” In other words, Heaven conducts its most serious business in an atmosphere of joy. In the Kingdom of God, there is some business being taken care of!  While you rejoice, transactions are made and prayers are answered. People may warn, “You better take this situation seriously!” When you apply the blood of Jesus and then rejoice, you can tell them, “I am taking this extremely serious!”

My mother used to “take care of business” by shouting and running around the church. My dad would comment as she ran, “It’s not necessary unless it’s necessary!” Is it necessary? Yes! If God sits in the Heavens and laughs until He sees all His enemies under His feet, then we the Church, citizens of His Kingdom, should take our place in Christ and conduct Kingdom business with Him in an atmosphere of victory, knowing the good work God has begun, He will finish!

He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh....Psalm 2:4

And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus.  Ephesians 2:6

When the Body of Christ meets together, it is for the purpose of worshiping God and “taking care of business.”  I like what William Barclay says about the church.

The Greek word for Church is ecclesia and was originally used to describe a gathering of the citizens of Athens. Its decisions conformed to the laws of the state and its powers were to all intents and purposes unlimited. It declared war, made peace, contracted treaties and arranged alliances. It was ultimately responsible for the conduct of all military operations. It raised and allocated funds.  It comes from the Hebrew root word which means “to summon.” In the Hebrew sense it means God’s people being called together to listen to or act for God.

William Barclay, New Testament Words

The book of Acts emphasizes the place where they were assembled was shaken. There is always “some assembly required” for the power of God to shake the earth. (Acts 4:31). There was a corporate prayer meeting and a corporate faith as they lifted their voices together.

Hebrews 4:16 tells us what we’ll find at the throne of grace when we come boldly by the blood. We can obtain mercy and find grace to help us in the time of need. Then we take our place in a great assembly of the Body of Christ in Heaven and earth and participate in Heaven’s business carried out in the earth. but ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels…” (Hebrews 12:22 – 24).

What is the business that Heaven, earth, angels, God, and Jesus are taking care of? The business of the kingdom is to enforce all that Jesus bought for the Church at the cross. God is using the Church to display His wisdom to principalities and powers. Remember, Heaven conducts its most serious business in an atmosphere of joy. The atmosphere of joy releases power to do miracles. It will destroy the works of darkness until that day when the God of Peace forever crushes Satan underneath our feet (Romans 16:20). We live in the consciousness of the triumph of Christ. We are the triumphant Church!

My dad’s church knew how to take care of business.  A prophecy or message from God would be declared and then, there would be great joy in the Holy Ghost! I used to wonder what was going on! Now I know that needs were being met, bodies were being healed, and the joy of the Lord was mending broken hearts! That’s what happens when the church comes together. There can be a song, prophecy, tongue or revelation. When people believe the Word of God that comes forth, they can receive it with joy unspeakable and full of glory! I call that “gathering the spoil.” It is the Kingdom culture.

This month we want to offer you the 4CD set Joy: The Serious Business of Heaven and our book, The Secret Power of Joy.  For your offering of $20 or more, we will send you these resources that will stir up the joy of the Lord and help you take care of the business in your life supernaturally.  You can also listen to all of our messages on the MHM app for free or download the MP3’s from the website www.markhankins.org.
